The New York Yankees won the World Series in 2009
It was the 40th participation in the World Series for the New York Yankees, with 26 titles won thus far. However, even the success-spoilt Yankees had to overcome a long period without trophies: the last participation in the World Series was six years earlier (2003), the last World Series title as long as nine years (2000). In the year of their successful comeback the Yankees paid slightly less in salaries than in the year before, however, this year's 201.5 million US dollars was still a league record. Newcomers C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Borer (both pitchers) and Mark Teixeira alone were paid more than 50 million US dollars in salaries.
